A trip to Newbury, England, inside one of the most historic properties in the UK. Who did not follow the British series Downton Abbey? And who does not miss the episodes and characters like Mrs. Patmore or Lady Mary Crawley? There are more than 200 countries that broadcast the series that has been nominated 37 times for Emmys and entered the Guinness World Record in 2011 as the most critically acclaimed series. The series takes place before and after World War I and tells the adventures and misadventures of the aristocratic and powerful Crawley family. In this post, I reveal my visit to Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey.
Uma viagem a Newbury, em Inglaterra, ao interior de uma das propriedades com mais história do Reino Unido.
Quem não acompanhou a série britânica Downton Abbey? E quem não sente saudades dos episódios e de personagens como Mrs. Patmore ou Lady Mary Crawley? São mais de 200 os países que transmitiram a série já nomeada 37 vezes aos Emmys e que entrou no Guinness World Record, em 2011, como a série mais aclamada pela crítica. A série passa-se numa época pré e pós-Primeira Grande Guerra e conta as aventuras e desventuras da aristocrática e poderosa família Crawley. Neste post, conto-vos a minha visita a Highclere Castle, a verdadeira Downton Abbey.
I remember planning to leave London one early morning to make sure I had time to see everything in detail. I took the train at Paddington station, towards Newbury (Berkshire), on a journey that took me through the middle of the countryside and took about an hour and a half. Arriving at Newbury Station, the best way to reach Highclere Castle is by taxi (which takes about 15 minutes).
The taxi driver who took me was extremely friendly, and as we talked along the way, she was inevitably talking about the history of the real owners of 'Downton Abbey' and clarifying me about some of the celebrities who have a house in that county. This is the case of Kate Middleton's family, who live in the small village of Buckleburry, where also married her sister Pippa Middleton. It's rumored that Beyoncé have bought a house there too...
My curiosity was more than a lot, and as we approached, the anxiety grew inside of me. But justice must be done to it! The grandeur of the castle is phenomenal. The closer I got the emblematic castle, much I had the feeling of going back a few centuries. Nor Mr. Carson or Mrs. Hughes were there to guide me through the gigantic mansion, but the truth is that every corner was more than familiar to me.
Recordo-me de ter planeado sair de Londres numa manhã, bem cedo, para ter a certeza de que teria tempo para ver tudo ao pormenor. Apanhei o comboio na estação de Paddington, em direção a Newbury (Berkshire), numa viagem que me levou pelo meio do campo e que demorou cerca de uma hora e meia. Chegada à estação de Newbury, a melhor forma de chegar a Highclere Castle é de táxi (trajeto que demora cerca de 15 minutos).
A taxista que me levou era extremamente simpática e, à medida que fomos conversando pelo caminho, ela foi-me inevitavelmente falando da história dos verdadeiros donos de ‘Downton Abbey’ e esclarecendo de algumas das personalidades que têm casa naquele condado. É o caso da família de Kate Middleton, Duquesa de Cambridge, que vivem na pequena aldeia de Buckleburry, local onde o ano passado se casou também a sua irmã Pippa Middleton. Consta que também Beyoncé terá comprado casa para aqueles lados…
A minha curiosidade era mais do que muita e, à medida que nos aproximávamos, a ansiedade crescia dentro de mim. Mas, justiça lhe seja feita! A grandiosidade do castelo é fenomenal. Bastou chegar às imediações do emblemático castelo para parecer que, de repente, havia recuado uns quantos séculos. À minha espera e para me guiarem pela gigantesca mansão não estavam nem Mr. Carson, nem Mrs. Hughes, mas a verdade é que cada recanto me era mais do que familiar.
The castle, which is more than 300 years old, and the whole extension of its property (this one with 1300 years of history), belongs to the 8th Count and Countess of Carnarvon, George Herbert and Lady Fiona Carnarvon. Ownership has passed from generation to generation until they reach the present counts. The castle was designed by Sir Charles Barry in the year of 1842, curiously the same architect responsible for the English Parliament, better known by the emblematic Big Ben.
There's as interesting thing, and very few know this detail: the father of the current Earl of Carnarvon, Lord Porchester, was one of Queen Elizabeth II's best friends. Some even say that the relationship between the Queen and the owner of Highclere Castle could have been more than just a friendship - this fact is shown in the series 'The Crown' (Netflix), which I am also a fan. The truth is that Elizabeth II came to be a constant presence in Highclere Castle (perhaps there's the reason why she was interested in the series 'Downton Abbey') and she is the godmother of the son of Lord Porchester.
Getting inside through the main door of the house, we have immediate access to the hall designed in Gothic style. It is said to have been created in 1870 by George Gilbert Scott, the same architect responsible for the Albert Memorial and St. Pancras station in London. The library is one of the most remarkable places in the series and we get there right after entering the first wing of the house. From a comfortable, opulent and even masculine atmosphere, inside is an extraordinary collection of over 5650 books. During the time of the Great War, when the castle was transformed into a military hospital, it was in the library that the officers spent much of the day and often dined there.
O castelo, que conta com mais de 300 anos, e toda a extensão de propriedade em seu redor (esta com 1300 anos de história) pertencem ao 8º Conde e Condessa de Carnarvon, George Herbert e Lady Fiona Carnarvon. A propriedade tem passado de geração em geração, até chegar aos atuais condes. O castelo foi desenhado por Sir Charles Barry, no ano de 1842, curiosamente o mesmo arquiteto responsável pelo Parlamento inglês, mais conhecido pelo emblemático Big Ben.
Curiosamente, e muitos poucos sabem deste pormenor, o pai do atual Conde de Carnarvon, Lord Porchester, era um dos melhores amigos da rainha Isabel II. Há até quem diga que a relação entre a rainha e o dono de Highclere Castle, poderia ter sido mais do que uma simples amizade – este facto é-nos mostrado na série The Crown (Netflix), da qual também sou sobejamente fã. A verdade é que Isabel II chegou a ser uma presença constante em Highclere Castle ( talvez daí também o seu conhecido interesse na série Downton Abbey) e é ela a madrinha do filho de Lord Porchester.
Entrando pela porta principal da casa, temos acesso imediato ao hall desenhado em estilo gótico. Consta que terá sido criado em 1870 por George Gilbert Scott, o mesmo arquiteto responsável pelo Albert Memorial e pela estação de St. Pancras, em Londres. A biblioteca é um dos locais mais marcantes da série e ao qual chegamos pouco depois de entrar na primeira ala da casa. De atmosfera confortável, opulenta e até masculina, no seu interior encontra-se uma extraordinária coleção de mais de 5650 livros. Durante os tempos da Grande Guerra, quando o castelo se transformou num autêntico hospital militar, era na biblioteca que os oficiais passavam grande parte do dia e onde muitas vezes jantavam.
- THE MUSIC ROOM Living room with walls covered with gold panels and embroidered Italian silk from the 16th century. In the past, it was once used as a Ping Pong room, now used for breakfast. Here are also two of the most valuable pieces of the castle - the secretary and chair of Napoleon Bonaparte.
- THE DRAWING ROOM Space fully decorated by the 5th Countess of Carnarvon, Lady Almina, with green silk from France.
- THE MORNING ROOM Space redecorated by the 7th Countess in 1988-9, which created a more intimate and feminine environment.
- THE RED STAIRCASE The stairs that lead directly to the floor of the rooms and where the servants could never pass.
- THE GALLERY & THE GALLERY BEDROOMS In all there are 50 to 80 rooms in the castle. Some of the rooms were given names to mark the stay of some members of the royal family. About 35 rooms were used by the family and the guests of the castle, the remainder belonged to the servants who in the high era of the Victorian and Edwardian aristocracy were many.
- THE SALOON This is the heart of the castle, where it comes to give the famous wooden staircase (Oak Staircase) that so often appears in the series.
- THE DINING ROOM The no less well-known dining room, where all the main meals of the house were served.
- THE OAK STAIRCASE These stairs are located precisely at the base of the castle tower and it took almost a year to be installed (December 1861 to October 1862). It was here that in the series the official wedding photograph of Lady Mary was made.
- THE SERVERY STAIRCASE The stone stairs used only by the servants of the house and that gave access to the kitchen of the castle and to the rooms. The servants who married were entitled to a small house in the park of the estate.
- THE GARDENS AND THE PARK It is difficult not to be lost here, because the extension of land is to lose sight of. Through the property were being built over the centuries various monuments and secret gardens. The Temple of Diana (which has appeared in the movie Pride and Prejudice), Heaven's Gate, Jackdaws Castle, Etruscan Temple and Andover Lodge are some of them.
- THE MUSIC ROOM
Sala de estar com paredes forradas a painéis dourados e de seda bordada italiana do século XVI. No passado, chegou a ser usada como sala de Ping Pong, agora é usada para pequenos almoços. Aqui também se encontram duas das mais valiosas peças do castelo - a secretaria e cadeira de Napoleão Bonaparte.

As escadas que levam diretamente ao andar dos quartos e por onde os criados nunca podiam passar.
- THE GALLERY & THE GALLERY BEDROOMS
Ao todo existem 50 a 80 quartos no castelo. A alguns dos quartos foram dados nomes para assinalar a estadia de alguns membros da família real inglesa. Cerca de 35 quartos eram usados pela família e pelos convidados do castelo, os restantes pertenciam aos criados que na época alta da aristocracia Vitoriana e Eduardiana eram muitos.
- THE SALOON
Este é o coração do castelo, onde vem dar a famosa escada de madeira (Oak Staircase) que tantas vezes aparece na série.
- THE DINING ROOM
A não menos conhecida sala de jantar, onde eram servidas todas as refeições principais da casa.
- THE OAK STAIRCASE
Estas escadas localizam-se precisamente na base da torre do castelo e foi necessário quase um ano para que fossem ali instaladas (de dezembro de 1861 a outubro de 1862). Foi aqui que, na série, foi feita a fotografia oficial de casamento de Lady Mary.
- THE SERVERY STAIRCASE
As escadas em pedra utilizadas unicamente pelos criados da casa e que dava acesso à cozinha do castelo e aos aposentos. Os criados que formassem casal tinham direito a uma pequena moradia no parque da propriedade.
- OS JARDINS E O PARQUE
Aqui o difícil está em não nos desorientarmos, pois a extensão de terreno é de perder de vista. Pela propriedade foram sendo construídos ao longo dos séculos vários monumentos e jardins secretos. The Temple of Diana (que já apareceu no filme Orgulho e Preconceito), Heaven's Gate, Jackdaws Castle, Etruscan Temple e Andover Lodge são alguns deles.
Despite all the rooms in the house that we had access, to keep the original decoration and the main objects that were part of it many years ago, it is interesting to see that, nevertheless, the castle has life and never really lost it. And this happens because the actual Counts of Carnarvon actually live in Highclere Castle and this is noticeable in the smallest details, such as the dozens and dozens of frames with photographs of the younger members of the family, or paintings of them and even some modern objects mixed with all the other relics of so many centuries ago.
For those of you who are missing this extraordinary series for now, besides being able to review the various seasons on Netflix on your couch, I strongly advise you to read the book Lady Almina and The Royal Downton Abbey, written by the current Countess of Carnarvon. Because, in fact, often the real facts are far more extraordinary than fiction.
The castle has the doors opened to the public, as a rule, at two different times of the year: Easter and summer. Today, Highclere Castle already has an App through which we can get a sense of the whole history of that place. Jim Carter, the actor who played the role of Butler Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey, is the voice behind the narratives told in this application.
Apesar de todas as divisões da casa as quais tivemos acesso manterem a decoração original e os objetos principais que delas faziam parte há muitos anos atrás, é interessante verificar que, ainda assim, o castelo tem vida e na verdade nunca a perdeu. Isto porque os atuais Condes de Carnarvon vivem de facto em Highclere Castle e isso nota-se nos mais pequenos pormenores, como as dezenas e dezenas de molduras com fotografias dos membros mais novos da família, ou quadros com imagens dos mesmos e até alguns objetos dos tempos mais modernos misturados com todas as restantes relíquias de há tantos séculos atrás.
Para quem, neste momento, estiver a morrer de saudades desta extraordinária série, para além de poder rever no sofá as várias temporadas através da Netflix, aconselho vivamente a lerem o livro Lady Almina and The Real Downton Abbey, escrito pela atual Condessa de Carnarvon. Porque, na verdade, muitas vezes os factos reais são bem mais extraordinários do que a ficção.
O castelo tem as portas abertas ao público, por norma, em duas alturas diferentes do ano: pela Páscoa e durante o verão. Atualmente, Highclere Castle já conta com uma App através da qual podemos ter uma noção de toda a história daquele local. Jim Carter, o ator que interpretou o papel de mordomo Mr. Carson em Downton Abbey, é a voz por detrás das narrativas contadas nesta aplicação.
