The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome their first child after she went into labour in the early hours of today.
The baby was delivered at 5.26am, at home. Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son.
The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.
The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with her daughter at Frogmore Cottage.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby will have a different life to the cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.
1. Probably, it will never be King. Despite the fact that Prince Harry is every bit as royal as his brother William, he is the 6th in line to the British throne. And that make the birth of Harry's first child nowhere near the same meaning of George's. But I dare to say that, the excitement for this new royal baby isn't smaller. Harry had been in third position to the throne all his life, but the arrival of Prince George and then Princess Charlotte and Price Louis shunted him down several places. And now, his baby is slipping ahead of Prince Andrew in seventh. And well, being that far down the line of succession means it's pretty unlikely the new royal baby will ever be crowned King or Queen.
2. The new baby won't also be a prince. The thing is: Louis and Charlotte weren't actually meant to have the title Prince and Princess. That comes with an archaic rule made by King George V in 1917, who wanted a 'slimmed-down monarchy'. In a decree, he ruled that when it comes to the monarch’s great-grandchildren, only the eldest living child (that would be George) of the oldest living son (William) of the monarch's oldest living son (Charles) should have "the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names". But the Queen changed the rules before George was born, issuing a decree of her own that ensured any future children of William and Kate (regardless of their gender, or the order of their birth) would be a Prince or Princess. It's thought that Queen Elizabeth may not do the same for Meghan and Harry's children, because of how far down the line of succession they are.
3. In fact, the new baby might not even get a title. As Harry and Meghan's baby is a boy, he will automatically inherit the title 'Earl of Dumbarton', which is one of the official titles Prince Harry received on his wedding day. This doesn't apply to a daughter, however, because of ancient traditions. So, if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a baby girl, she may be given a courtesy title of 'Lady', just like Lady Louise Windsor. Or, she could go without a title entirely, just as Princess Anne did with her two children, Peter and Zara Phillips, turning down the titles the Queen offered to them in order to give their kids a more normal life. That might be the choice of Meghan and Harry too.
4. The baby won't live in Kensington Palace. Meghan and Harry planned to relocate to Frogmore Cottage, to bring their child up in Windsor. After extensive renovations of the property, which had previously been divided up into separate units for staff, they moved in to Frogmore Cottage earlier this month. Prince William and Kate Middleton did a similar thing when they started their family, living in Anmer Hall in Norfolk, a property on the Sandringham Estate which was gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth for their wedding. But in 2017, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge increased their royal duties, they relocated to central London and now reside in Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace. While the family still spends some time at Anmer Hall during school holidays, the majority of their life is based in London.
5. Baby Sussex will have a different surname from cousins. Despite their dads being brothers, the royal cousins will have different surnames to one another. Although the official royal website confirms many royals don't have a surname (if they're a HRH, they aren't required to), it's become commonplace for them to use one, especially while at school. And technically, the official royal surname is Mountbatten-Windsor, after Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh decided that would be the case in 1960 because it reflected both of their families. However, over the years a pattern has emerged, which sees members of the royal family assume a surname in accordance with their parents' title. Prince George, for example, is known at school as George Cambridge. Growing up, Prince William and Prince Harry went by the surname Wales, reflecting Prince Charles' official title, the Prince of Wales. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have adopted the surname York, because their father, Prince Andrew, is the Duke of York. That's why Meghan and Harry's baby will probably use the surname Sussex.
6. The newborn probably won't have a nanny. A lot of people are defending they do not plan to hire a nanny or nurse initially, and will instead rely on the help of Meghan’s mother. Meghan is expected to take around six months off for maternity leave, so it may be that when she goes back to work, she will decide it is necessary to have the help of a nanny. But until then, Meghan and Harry seem to want to be as hands on as possible.
7. Meghan and Harry's baby will probably have a job that isn't just being a royal. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are full-time royals, just like Prince William and Kate Middleton. But while the Cambridge kids will most likely all grow up to follow in their parents' footsteps where their careers are concerned, Meghan and Harry's child will probably have to get a normal job, just like Eugenie and Beatrice who, despite being Princesses, both have normal jobs.
8. The baby is a dual citizen, having automatically acquired US citizenship, via Meghan, at birth.
