Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the son of Prince Harry and Meghan, has been introduced to the world at Windsor Castle and will soon cross another item off the royal newborn must-do list: his christening.
The christening might be a totally private affair, which would potentially make sense, given that Meghan and Harry are doing things exactly how they want with their new family.
WHEN? Buckingham Palace has yet to announce the date for Archie's christening, but it's thought that it could take place in the first week of July. Christenings in the Royal Family typically happen two or three months after the baby is born. In the case of the Cambridge kids, George and Louis’s baptisms took place three months after their births, while Princess Charlotte waited just two months.
WHERE? St George's Chapel in Windsor is likely to be the venue, which is where Prince Harry was baptised in 1984. And, of course, Prince Harry and Meghan married at the chapel in May 2018. Both Prince George and Prince Louis’s christenings took place at St. James’s Palace in London, while their sister’s was celebrated at St. Mary Magdalene in Sandringham.
WHO'S EXPECTED TO COME Senior royals including Prince Charles and Camilla, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to attend, along with Meghan's mother Doria. Only close family members and Archie's godparents are expected to attend his christening.
THE QUEEN MIGHT NOT BE PRESENT The Queen apparently has prior commitments at that time, so she won't be in attendance. That's not entirely unprecedented. The monarch attended the christenings of Prince George and Princess Charlotte in 2013 and 2015, but missed Prince Louis' baptism last year.
THE GOWN Archie is expected to follow in the footsteps of his cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, by wearing a christening gown used for every generation of royal infants. The gown, remade by the Queen's dresser, Angela Kelly, in 2008, is an exact replica of the gown first commissioned by Queen Victoria 174 years ago. That gown was notably worn by 62 royal babies (including five monarchs) over the course of its 163 years of royal service.
THE LILY FONT The Lily Font, a silver gilt baptismal font also commissioned by Queen Victoria, is also expected to be used along with water from the River Jordan, two more royal traditions.
THE ARCHBISHOP The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, who presided over Louis, George and Charlotte's christenings, is likely to be involved in Archie's christening, although no announcements have been made by Buckingham Palace. Meghan herself became a member of the Church of England after being baptized and confirmed last year by Welby.
THE GODPARENTS Royal babies typically have around six godparents and Harry and Meghan are likely to follow that tradition. Prince William and Kate are not expected to be included as godparents. The names of whom Harry and Meghan may include as godparents include Serena Williams, Jessica Mulroney and Benita Litt, all close friends of Meghan's. On Harry's side, his cousin Princess Eugenie, mentor Mark Dyer and close friend Jake Warren are all names to watch. Harry could also honor his mom, the late Princess Diana, by choosing one of her close friends or siblings.
