What does being financially independent mean for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? Though the Sussex Royal website remains vague about where they'll receive their future income, it does hint that the couple's "new working model" will allow them to hold actual jobs.
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex take great pride in their work and are committed to continuing their charitable endeavours as well as establishing new ones," the website reads. According to the couple's website, "Under the current structure and financing arrangements, they are prohibited from earning any income in any form." They also do not earn any money from their charity work.
But, in my opinion, is not that easy to say they are going to be financially independent from now on... Prince Harry always will be the son of Prince Charles (heir of the throne) and Princess Diana. That, he can not change. And that has advantages and disadvantages.
Are the Royal Family disappointed with them? The formal reaction that came out of the Palace, after Prince Harry and Meghan's statement, is quite astonishing, because it talks about the palace on one side and the couple on the other.
"Discussions with the Duke and Duchess od Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."
Apparently, multiple sources at the palace have told the BBC that no members of the Royal Family were consulted about this by Harry and Meghan. There is talk of disappointment. There is talk of senior members of the Royal Family being hurt by the statement. And the openness about that emotion and about a division between the palace and Harry and Meghan is breathtaking. Normally they try and hold everything together, that is not happening now. It's very clear the palace is very upset about what's happened and that effectively Harry and Meghan are already independent of the rest of the palace machine, independent of the Royal Family.
Interestingly, this decision was announced a day before the birthday of Kate Middleton, who celebrates this Thursday 38 years. It is rumored that the Duchess of Cambridge did not invite Meghan for her birthday. But these are just rumours...
Apparently, according to The Telegraph, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have ignored an instruction from the Queen not to go public with their bombshell announcement that they would be stepping back from royal life.
