Recently, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made public detailed information about the wedding cake. Apparently, the couple chose an unusual cake - the flavour will be lemon elderflower, but will also incorporate the 'bright flavours of Spring' and the confection wil be topped off with buttercream frosting and fresh flowers. Clare Ptak of London's Violet Cakes will be the responsible for this work of art. But what exactly elderflower is? It's a blossom from an elder tree. They are abundant in the UK and can often be found on roadside hedges. It may taste unpleasant while raw, but cooking destroys its toxicity. Elderflowers ca be floral and fragrant, subtle yet heady. However, this is definitely an uncommon flavor for royal weding cakes. Traditionally, fruit cakes are main desserts at British weddings: Prince William and Kate had one at their ceremony (but they also had a second, chocolate biscuit cake); Princess Diana and Prince Charles also had fruit cake.
The couple have already chosen their wedding flowers. Philippa Craddock, who is based in London, is the florist who will be preparing all the flowers. As it was revealed by the Kensington Palace, 'the displays in St George’s Chapel will feature foliage from The Crown Estate and Windsor Great Park, and will use seasonal plants including branches of beech, birch and hornbeam, as well as white garden roses, peonies and foxgloves.'
The invitation cards were made by Barnard and Westwood, a fine printing company that's been crafting royal wedding invitations since 1985. These ones in particular feature an elegant script and the Prince of Wales' three-feathered badge in gold ink. The printers udes American ink on English paper, representing the union between Markle and Harry. The couple has already sent out about 800 invitations (600 for the ceremony and lunch party, and 200 for the evening reception).
