June is the month of the big festivities. The night of the 12th is lived to the full on the streets of Lisbon. June 13 is the day of St. Antonio, the patron saint of the city. We celebrate this day (holiday in Portugal), because that was the day of his death in 1231.
Legend has it that Frei Antonio decided to help a poor girl without a dowry who wanted to get married, throwing her a purse with the alms of the faithful. "This is the dowry that will make the bride marry," he wrote in a little note. That is why, still today, many are the single women who by this time ask for help to the holy matchmaker. And it is also why in the small pot of basil are spiked paper flowers with little popular rhymes directed at men or women. The idea is to offer these little vessels in this night. In other times, the boy offered a vase of basil - also known as valentine herb - to his beloved. The tradition fell into disuse, but it made perfect sense, since the saint is a matchmaker.
This is usually the time when we celebrate the arrival of the heat. This year, was a little chilly, but even so there's still party! The fun is always lived among many basil, sardines and glasses of beer or sangria.
By this time and for several years the autarchy has been organizing the Sardinha Festas de Lisboa Contest that, through Facebook, chooses the most beautiful work. "Save the Sardines" is the motto of 2018, because the species, unfortunately, no longer abounds. Still, frozen or not, it is certain that she roasted on the grill of the 800 camps of Lisbon.
Along with all this, the famous and traditional popular marches also parade in the Avenida da Liberdade. The first march dates from 1932, although before that by the city already were organized "bailaricos" and informal parades. Each neighborhood of Lisbon has its march. This year it won the Alfama march, followed by the Bairro Alto and Madragoa.
Every year, many tourists fill the Portuguese capital at this time. This year, a record-high number of visitors is expected to hit two million people.
Junho é o mês das festas. A noite do dia 12 é vivida ao máximo nas ruas de Lisboa. O 13 de junho é o dia de Santo António, o santo padroeiro da cidade. Celebramos este dia (feriado em Portugal), por ter sido esse o dia da sua morte em 1231.
Conta a lenda que frei António decidiu ajudar uma pobre rapariga sem dote que se queria casar, atirando-lhe uma bolsa com as esmolas dos fiéis. "Este é o dote que fará a noiva casar-se", escreveu num bilhetinho. É por isso, que ainda hoje muitas são as solteiras que por esta altura pedem uma ajuda ao santo casamenteiro. E é também por isso que nos manjericos são espetadas flores de papel com pequenas rimas populares dirigidas a homens ou mulheres. A ideia é que nesta noite se ofereçam estes pequenos vasos. Noutros tempos, o rapaz oferecia um vaso de manjerico - também conhecido por erva dos namorados - à sua amada. A tradição caiu em desuso, mas fazia todo o sentido, já que o santo é casamenteiro.
Esta é, geralmente, a altura em que celebramos a chegada do calor. Essa parte, este ano, deixou um bocadinho a desejar, mas nem por isso a festa deixou de ser feita! A diversão é sempre vivida entre muitos manjericos, sardinhas e copos de cerveja ou sangria.
Por esta altura e há já vários anos que a autarquia organiza o Concurso Sardinha Festas de Lisboa que, através do Facebook elege a obra mais bonita. "Salvem as Sardinhas" é o mote de 2018, pois a espécie, infelizmente, já não abunda. Ainda assim, congelada ou não, é certo que assou na grelha dos 800 arraiais de Lisboa.
A par de tudo isto, nesta noite de festa desfilam também na Avenida da Liberdade as famosas e tradicionais marchas populares. A primeira marcha data de 1932, embora antes disso pela cidade já se organizassem bailaricos e desfiles informais. Cada bairro de Lisboa tem a sua marcha. Este ano venceu a marcha de Alfama, seguida da do Bairro Alto e Madragoa.
Todos os anos, são muitos os turistas que enchem a capital portuguesa por esta época. Este ano, espera-se um recorde de visitantes, calculando-se que atinja cerca de dois milhões de pessoas.
