Livi Gosling is a very special person I'm about to introduce you. She's a freelance illustrator from Hertfordshire (UK) and she is a specialist in drawing maps, editorials and food illustration.
By the time I thought about creating my own blog, I didn't want it to be "one more blog", I wanted that from the beginning people understood what I really want to share and the idea behind the name "My Lilobridge".
I remember I tried to contact a few illustrators I had searched through the Internet, but as we were very close from Christmas time, a lot of them had too much work in hands, and couldn't help me in that exact moment. One or two gave me some names of friends illustrators and it was then I found Livi Gosling.
Obviously, by the time, she was working with other things but she accepted to help me, which made me very happy. So, as you can see on my Homepage, I have a bridge linking Lisbon to London - that's an illustration by Livi.
We talked for a few weeks, she made a sketch of the final work and I just loved it!
Livi Gosling é alguém muito especial que gostaria de vos apresentar. É ilustradora freelancer em Hertfordshire (Reino Unido) e especialista em desenho de mapas, editoriais e ilustração de alimentos.
Quando pensei em criar meu blog, não queria que fosse "mais um blog", queria que desde o início as pessoas entendessem o que realmente eu quero partilhar e a ideia por etrás do nome "My Lilobridge".
Lembro que tentei entrar em contacto com alguns ilustradores que pesquisei através da Internet, mas como estávamos muito perto da época de Natal, a maioria estava com muito trabalho em mãos e não conseguiu ajudar-me naquele preciso momento. Um ou dois deles deram-me alguns nomes de amigos ilustradores e foi então que encontrei Livi Gosling.
Obviamente, no momento, ela estava também a trabalhar noutros projetos, mas aceitou ajudar-me, o que me deixou muito feliz. Portanto, como podem ver na minha Homepage, está lá desenhada uma ponte que liga Lisboa a Londres - eis a ilustração de Livi.
Conversámos durante algumas semanas, ela fez um esboço do trabalho final e eu simplesmente adorei!
As a kid, were you good at design? I have always loved drawing. As a child, I used to love copying the art from Disney comics and trying to sell them to my family! I loved crafts and was always happy to be making something. I wouldn’t say I was necessarily ‘good’ at it but I certainly has enthusiasm!
Does anyone in your family have the same artistic vein? My parents are directors of a Graphic Design company that they created when I was a baby. So, yes!
When did you start thinking about illustration as a professional career? I knew I wanted to study Illustration when I was studying on my Foundation Course and after graduating from my Illustration degree, I knew I wanted to give freelancing a try. I moved back home, got a part time job and started to freelance.
What kind of things did you start drawing? My first commission was an illustrated food map of Dublin for Jamie Magazine. Before I got my first commission after graduating, I spent a lot of time experimenting with my style. The work I created in the summer after Uni was truly horrid… I found my feet about a year later.
What kind of materials do you use? I use black Indian Ink for all of my work now. I used to use gouache, watercolour, pencil and collage but now I stick with Ink. I draw each individual element of my illustrations, ink them and then scan them into Photoshop to colour and compose the image. I love the flexibility that this gives me.
You have a special passion for drawing food, am I right? Why is that so? You do like to cook as well, right? You’re correct! I adore food! Both drawing it and eating it. If I’m not drawing at my desk then it’s pretty likely that you’ll find me baking something. Drawing used to be my ‘hobby’ and now that it’s my job, I think it’s important to have something that can help you unwind. Cooking is definitely my go-to method for trying to unwind and relax. I know that some illustrators are great at drawing and producing more personal work in the spare time, but i’ve never been great at doing that. I’d rather do something else.
Through the years you have been working with a lot of brands, magazines and other entities. Was there any project that you loved the most to be part of? One of my favourite ever jobs was creating editorial illustrations for Fool Magazine. Magnus Nilsson wrote an article for them about Swedish Food Culture and I got to illustrate it! I got so much creative freedom and loved learning so much about pickling, fermenting and curing.
Em criança, já era boa a desenho? Sempre amei desenhar. Quando criança, eu adorava copiar os desenhos dos quadradinhos da Disney e tentar vendê-los à minha família! Eu adorava artesanato e ficava sempre feliz em fazer alguma coisa. Não diria que era necessariamente "boa", mas tinha certamente entusiasmo!
Alguém na sua família tem a mesma veia artística? Os meus pais são diretores de uma empresa de design gráfico que criaram quando eu era bebé. Por isso, sim!
Quando começou a olhar para a ilustração como uma possível carreira profissional? Eu sabia que queria estudar Ilustração quando estava no meu Foundation Course e depois de me formar no curso de ilustração, sabia que queria dar uma oportunidade como freelancer. Voltei para casa, consegui um emprego em part-time e comecei a trabalhar como freelancer.
Que tipo de coisas começou a desenhar? A minha primeira encomenda foi um mapa alimentar ilustrado de Dublin para a Jamie Magazine. Antes de conseguir a minha primeira comissão depois de me formar, passei muito tempo a experimentar o meu estilo. O trabalho que criei no verão após a Uni foi realmente horrível… só assentei cerca de um ano depois.
Que tipo de materiais usa? Eu uso tinta preta para todos os meus trabalhos agora. Costumava usar guache, aquarela, lápis e colagem, mas agora fiquei-me pela tinta. Desenho cada elemento individual das minhas ilustrações, pinto-as e digitalizo-as no Photoshop para colorir e compor a imagem. Adoro a flexibilidade que isso me dá.
E há uma paixão especial por desenhar comida, verdade? Porquê? Sei que também gosta de cozinhar... Tudo verdade! Eu adoro comida! Quer seja a desenhá-la, quer a comê-la. Se eu não estiver a desenhar na minha mesa, é bem provável que me encontre a cozinhar qualquer coisa. Desenho costumava ser o meu "hobby" e agora que é o meu trabalho, acho importante ter algo que possa ajudar a relaxar. Cozinhar é definitivamente o meu método preferido para tentar relaxar e descontrair. Eu sei que alguns ilustradores são ótimos a desenhar e a produzir mais trabalho pessoal durante o tempo livre, mas nunca fui boa a fazer isso. Prefiro fazer outra coisa.
Ao longo dos anos tem trabalhado com muitas marcas, revistas e outras entidades. Houve algum projeto do qual mais tenha gostado de fazer parte? Um dos meus trabalhos favoritos foi criar ilustrações editoriais para a Fool Magazine. Magnus Nilsson escreveu um artigo para eles sobre a Cultura Alimentar Sueca e eu consegui ilustrar isso! Tenho muita liberdade criativa e adorei aprender muito sobre conservação, fermentação e cura.
Last year you launched an amazing book with Rachel Dixon, “Maps of the United Kingdom”. How it was to work in a project like this? How much time did you spend on that? It was such a joy! I loved knowing that each week, I would get a different regional map brief to illustrate. Being a freelancer means that you don’t often get security like this. It was a comfort to know that I had regular work coming in. In fact, it was quite a challenge balancing the workload of this mammoth book project with other work. I was very lucky to be so busy for those 18 months! And as is the nature of freelancing, I’ve since had quiet spells. It ebbs and flows. I much prefer being busy.
In 2017 you worked in the book “Women Who Dared”. How did you do to draw all those great women? It was great working with Sourcebooks on Women Who Dared. They provided a bio for each lady and I then went about researching them and sketching their portraits. It was tricky drawing so many different amazing people as I don’t find creating a ‘likeness’ very easy! I loved learning about those incredible women. There stories deserve to be heard.
Would you love to have a children’s book of your own, or work more in this kind of projects? I would LOVE that. I’ve actually been writing some picture book ideas recently and I’d love to work more in Children’s Publishing. I have a variety of fiction and non-fiction ideas but it’s challenging to get these ideas seen or heard. It’s an area I’m pretty new to, but I’m trying :)
No ano passado lançou um livro incrível com Rachel Dixon, “Maps of the United Kingdom”. Como foi trabalhar num projeto como esse? Quanto tempo demorou até estar finalizado? Foi uma alegria tão grande! Eu adorava saber que a cada semana eu ia pegar num mapa regional diferente para ilustrar. Ser freelancer significa que não se costuma obter uma segurança dessas. Foi um conforto saber que tinha um trabalho regular. Na verdade, foi um grande desafio equilibrar a carga de trabalho deste projeto de um livro gigantesco com outro trabalho. Tive muita sorte de estar tão ocupado durante esses 18 meses! E como é a natureza de um freelancer, desde então tive períodos de silêncio. Ela diminui e flui. Prefiro mil vezes estar ocupada.
Em 2017 trabalhou no livro “Women Who Dared”. Como fez para desenhar todas aquelas mulheres maravilhosas? Foi ótimo trabalhar com a Sourcebooks no livro "Women Who Dared". Eles forneceram uma biografia para cada mulher e eu fui pesquisando e desenhando os seus retratos. Foi complicado desenhar tantas pessoas incríveis, na medida em que não acho muito fácil criar 'semelhanças'! Mas adorei aprender sobre essas mulheres incríveis. Há histórias que merecem ser ouvidas.
Gostava de ter um livro infantil só seu ou trabalhar mais nesse tipo de projeto? Adorava! Na verdade, tenho escrito algumas ideias de livros ilustrados recentemente e adoraria trabalhar mais na publicação infantil. Tenho uma variedade de ideias de ficção e não-ficção, mas é desafiador ter essas ideias vistas ou ouvidas. É uma área ainda muito nova para mim, mas estou a tentar :)
Living in a quiet Hertfordshire village gives you the inspiration you need to create? How is it to live here? It really is quiet. But that suits me and my fiancee really well. I have a studio space at home and a deskspace in the neighbouring town. It’s great having both as I sometimes find it easier to come up with ideas at home and then do the rendering away from home. There are some really lovely walks in our village so if ever I’m stuck for inspiration then a long, rambling Countryside walk usually helps clear my head.
I'm suspicious, but I love your work and that's why I chose you to do the main design of my blog. You were super professional, you did everything in a record time and you got the message and the idea that I just had in mind perfectly. When someone like me approaches you, what are usually the steps you take? How’s your creative process? Thanks so much! I’m so glad that you’re so pleased with the image. That’s lovely :) I loved creating it for you. When a potential client gets in touch with a project idea, I always make sure I determine the brief, budget and deadline. I also like to know how they came across my work! So many clients find me on Pinterest which always fascinates me, as I rarely use it! Once the client and I have agreed a budget and deadline, I get to work. I usually send a black and white version to the client first and then add colour once I’ve received feedback and made changes. Then we have the second (and often final) round of feedback before creating the final illustration.
Apart from your website, where people can find your work and buy it? I know that sometimes you expose it in street markets in the UK, but people can also buy things through Etsy, right?
You can find my work on Instagram, (@livi_gosling_illustration) that’s where I tend to post the most. My Etsy shop is where I sell prints but I do sometimes do craft markets in my local area or Leeds and Manchester. Check out my Instagram for updates on my craft fairs.
Do you intend to expand the items you are already selling? I will be adding more animal prints to my Etsy shop over the next couple of months. I always want to add more map prints too. I’d love to create some more printed textiles as well. I guess it’s just finding the time.

Viver numa vila tranquila de Hertfordshire dá-lhe a inspiração que precisa para criar? Como é viver aqui? É realmente sossegado. Mas isso combina muito bem comigo e com o meu namorado. Tenho um estúdio em casa e um espaço na cidade vizinha. É ótimo ter ambos, pois às vezes acho mais fácil ter ideias em casa e, depois, fazer o trabalho fora de casa. Há alguns passeios realmente adoráveis na nossa vila, então, se eu estiver em busca de inspiração, uma longa caminhada pelo campo geralmente ajuda a clarear a minha mente.
Eu sou suspeita, mas eu adoro o seu trabalho e é por isso que a escolhi para fazer o design principal do meu blog. Foi super profissional, fez tudo em tempo recorde e captou a minha mensagem e a ideia que eu tinha em mente na perfeição. Quando alguém como eu se aproxima e propõe um projeto, quais são os passos que toma? Como é o seu processo criativo? Muito obrigada! Fico tão feliz que tenha gostado tanto da imagem. Isso é adorável :) Eu gostei muito de a criar para si. Quando um cliente em potencial entra em contato com uma ideia de projeto, preocupo-me sempre em conseguir um briefing, faço um orçamento e determino um prazo. Também gosto de saber como chegaram até mim! Muitos clientes encontram-me através do Pinterest, o que sempre me fascina, já que raramente o uso! Uma vez que o cliente e eu concordamos com um orçamento e prazo, eu começo a trabalhar. Normalmente, envio uma versão em preto e branco para o cliente e, depois, adiciono cor depois de receber feedback e fazer alterações. Então, temos a segunda (e muitas vezes final) rodada de feedback antes de criar a ilustração final.
Além do seu site, onde as pessoas podem encontrar o seu trabalho e comprá-lo? Eu sei que às vezes expõe em mercados de rua no Reino Unido, mas as pessoas também podem comprar coisas através do site Etsy, certo?
