April 15, 2019 will forever be marked as a day of deep sadness for the Catholic world. The heart of Paris faded as thousands of people throughout the world wept and prayed helplessly before a burning Notre Dame cathedral.
No one ever thought that this could happen to one of the greatest symbols of France, the most visited monument in Europe. Notre Dame survived major wars, revolutions, threats of terrorist attacks ... it was over 800 years old and it took two centuries to build it.
And if the images of the outside shocked, those of the interior that today are seen of the aftermath, are not better. It is known that the great liturgical organ of the cathedral escaped the flames, as well as various religious relics and works of art, including stained glass.
The Gothic-style cathedral is one of the oldest in the world. Its construction began in the year 1163, and was dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus.
Here are some curiosities about this blessed place that has now been destroyed:
1 The site of the cathedral already had, before the construction of the building, a solid history linked to religious worship. The Celts would have celebrated their ceremonies where, later, the Romans erected a temple of devotion to the god Jupiter.
2. In 1793, during the French Revolution, more elements of the cathedral were destroyed and many of its treasures stolen, finishing the space itself for serving as a food store.
3. In 1965, as a result of excavations for the construction of an underground park in the cathedral square, catacombs were discovered that revealed Roman ruins, the Merovingian cathedral of the sixth century and medieval dwellings.
4. During the spirit of Romanticism, Victor Hugo wrote in 1831 the novel "Notre-Dame de Paris", The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Situating the events in the cathedral during the Middle Ages, the novel tells the story of Quasimodo who falls in love with a gypsy named Esmeralda. This same story was later adapted to one of Disney's most iconic animated films.
5. In 1431, it was in this cathedral that the coronation of Henry VI of England was given during the Hundred Years War.
6. In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned the emperor of France and his wife Josephine de Beauharnais the Empress, in the presence of Pope Pius VII.
7. In 1909 it was in the Cathedral of Notre Dame that the beatification of Joan of Arc was given.
8. To dominate the intermediate level of the cathedral is the rosette of 13 meters of diameter to the center embedded between the buttresses and flanked by twin windows. In front of him is the statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child.
9. Until yesterday, it was possible to visit the north tower from where, after a climb of 386 steps, one can glimpse the city of Paris, the pinnacles and the gargoyles of the cathedral that populated Victor Hugo's novel.
10. Different bells make up the cathedral's historic heritage and among them are Angelique-Françoise, Antoinette-Charlotte, Hyacinthe-Jeanne, Denise-David (in the northern tower) and Bourdon Emmanuel (in the southern tower) . There were more bells but with the French Revolution, many were melted to the manufacture of cannons. Since its installation in 1681, Bourdon Emmanuel has played only 84 times. The north tower bells, installed since 1856, ring every 15 minutes or at historical events, such as the end of World War I or the liberation of Paris in 1944.
O dia 15 de abril de 2019 ficará para sempre marcado como um dia de profunda tristeza para o mundo católico. O coração de Paris esmoreceu, ao mesmo tempo que milhares de pessoas pelo mundo choravam e rezavam, impotentes perante uma catedral de Notre Dame em chamas.
Ninguém nunca pensou que tal pudesse vir a acontecer com um dos maiores símbolos de França, aquele que era o monumento mais visitado de toda a Europa. Notre Dame sobreviveu a grandes guerras, revoluções, ameças de atentados terroristas... tinha mais de 800 anos de vida e foram precisos dois séculos para a construir.
E se as imagens do exterior chocaram, as do interior que hoje se viram do rescaldo, não são melhores. Sabe-se que o grande órgão litúrgico da catedral escapou às chamas, bem como várias relíquias religiosas e obras de arte, incluindo vitrais.
A catedral de estilo gótico é uma das mais antigas do mundo. A sua construção teve início no ano de 1163, e foi dedicada a Maria, Mãe de Jesus.
Eis algumas curiosidades acerca deste local abençoado e que agora foi destruído:
1 O local da catedral contava já, antes da construção do edifício, com um sólido historial ligado ao culto religioso. Os celtas teriam aqui celebrado as suas cerimônias onde, mais tarde, os romanos erigiriam um templo de devoção ao deus Júpiter.
2. Em 1793, no decorrer da Revolução francesa, mais elementos da catedral foram destruídos e muitos dos seus tesouros roubados, acabando o espaço em si por servir de armazém para alimentos.
3. Em 1965, em consequência de escavações para a construção de um parque subterrâneo na praça da catedral, foram descobertas catacumbas que revelaram ruínas romanas, da catedral merovíngia do século VI e de habitações medievais.
4. Durante o espírito do romantismo, Victor Hugo escreveu, em 1831, o romance “Notre-Dame de Paris”, O Corcunda de Notre-Dame. Situando os acontecimentos na catedral durante a Idade Média, o romance conta a história de Quasimodo que se apaixona por uma cigana de nome Esmeralda. Esta mesma história foi mais tarde adaptada a um dos mais emblemáticos filmes de animção da Disney.
5. Em 1431, foi nesta catedral que se deu a coroação de Henrique VI de Inglaterra durante a Guerra dos cem anos.
6. Em 1804, deu-se a coroação de Napoleão Bonaparte a imperador de França e a de sua mulher Josefina de Beauharnais a imperatriz, na presença do Papa Pio VII.
7. Em 1909 foi na Catedral de Notre Dame que se deu a beatificação de Joana d'Arc.
8. A dominar o nível intermédio da catedral encontra-se a rosácea de 13 metros de diâmetro ao centro encaixada entre os contrafortes e ladeada por janelas gémeas. À sua frente surge a estátua da Virgem Maria com o Menino.
9. Até ontem, era possível visitar a torre norte de onde, após uma subida de 386 degraus, se pode vislumbrar a cidade de Paris, os pináculos e os gárgulas da catedral que povoaram o romance de Victor Hugo.
10. Diferentes sinos compõem o património histórico da catedral e entre eles, encontram se os denominados: Angelique-Françoise, Antoinette-Charlotte, Hyacinthe-Jeanne, Denise-David (na torre do norte) e o Bourdon Emmanuel (na torre do sul). Já houve mais sinos mas com a Revolução Francesa, muitos foram derretidos para a fabricação de canhões. Desde a sua instalação, em 1681, o Bourdon Emmanuel tocou apenas 84 vezes. Os sinos da torre norte, instalados desde 1856, badalam a cada 15 minutos ou em eventos históricos, como no fim da Primeira Guerra Mundial ou na libertação de Paris em 1944.
