Now that the UK tour has started, and as I am preparing myself to see them at Wembley Stadium in London in less than a month, I could not help but remember what made me so fond of these five girls.
These days, I have brought back again all the Spice Girls CD’s and I’m already hearing them at home and in the car... At least one positive effect all this nostalgia has already caused: I don’t have to listen only kids music in the car! Yeah, I already got my daughter to be a fan of the greatest girlsband ever.
Now it is she who asks me to listen to the "Spice" and already hums "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends ...". Aside from that, I’ve found a series of merchandising at home ... books, notebooks, VHS tapes ... I was a real fan.
We were back in 1997 ... (although the group was formed in 1994) and I remember my parents offering me a CD just titled "Spice Girls" and still nobody knew them, at least in Portugal. The first single "Wannabe" was released only in 1996. As soon as I heard it for the first time, I was delighted because until then I had not heard anything like it. Pop music, five sexy girls singing, whose song lyrics defended something called "Girl Power". "The future is for women," they said.
And what was Girl Power?
1. "When you help a boy take the suitcase" 2. "When you wear high heels and keep your pose" 3. "When you know that you will always get what you want and nothing will stop you" 4. "When you hold your head up even if everything goes wrong" 5. "When you do not wait for him to call you" 6. "When you are loyal to your friends and they support you" 7. "When you believe in yourself and control your life"
Oh yeah! Was it, or was it not something a 12-year-old girl wanted to hear back then? Looking back now, I think they were partly responsible for my passion for the UK. They let me know that “world”, at first impact, making me dream.
They were five, all different from each other: Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Sporty Spice, Posh Spice and Scary Spice. Of all of them, there was soon one with which I identified myself immediately: Posh. Victoria was called Posh Spice because of her more upper-middle-class background, her choppy brunette bob cut and refined attitude, signature pout, form-fitting designer outfits (often a little black dress) and her love of high-heeled footwear.

Agora que a digressão pelo Reino Unido arrancou, e estando eu a preparar-me para as ver no estádio de Wembley, em Londres, em menos de um mês, não poderia deixar de recordar o que me fez gostar tanto destas cinco miúdas.
Por estes dias, voltei a desencantar todos os CDs das Spice Girls e já os ando a ouvir em casa e no carro. Pelo menos um efeito positivo toda esta nostalgia já causou: deixei de ter que ouvir só música de criança no carro! Sim, já consegui que a minha filha ficasse fã da maior girlsband de sempre.
Agora é ela quem me pede para ouvir as "Spice" e já cantarola "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends...". Àparte disso, andei a desencantar lá por casa uma série de merchandising... livros, cadernos, cassetes VHS... eu era uma verdadeira fã.

"Quando acreditas em ti e controlas a tua vida"
Oh yeah! Era, ou não era isto que uma miúda de 12 anos queria ouvir naquela época? Olhando agora para trás, acho que foram também elas, em parte, responsáveis pela minha paixão pelo Reino Unido. Elas deram-me a conhecer aquele mundo, num primeiro impacto, fazendo-me sonhar.
Elas eram cinco, todas diferentes umas das outras: Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Sporty Spice, Posh Spice e Scary Spice. De todas elas, houve logo uma com a qual me identifiquei de imediato: a Posh. A Victoria era chamada de Posh Spice por causa do seu passado de classe média alta, do seu corte de cabelo, pele morena e atitude refinada, biquini de marca, roupas de estilistas (geralmente um vestido preto) e a sua paixão por sapatos de salto alto.
Estão preparados para voltar atrás um bocadinho no tempo?!
