Did you know it's been eight years since Downton Abbey first aired on TV screens?... The popular ITV series ran for six seasons from 2010 to 2015.
Finally (and happily) after months of speculation about whether we might see more of the inhabitants of Downton Abbey, it was confirmed in last July that a movie spin-off was to be made.
One year after, the so expected day is almost here! We just have to be a little more patient.
WHAT'S IT ABOUT? According to the last trailer revealed, the film's plot will centre on a visit from the royal family. It's 1927, and the Crawley family and their army of loyal maids, butlers and cooks are thrown into disarray by the impending arrival of King George V and Queen Mary. Their Yorkshire estate is being run by fewer servants in the wake of the Great Depression and the aftermath of World War I, and so the family ask retired head butler Carson (Jim Carter) to return to help with their affairs. Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) is contemplating leaving the estate to start a new life, while Anna Bates Joanne Froggatt, Lady Mary's loyal maid, reminds her of the role that Downton plays in the quaint English village, asking her to stay: "Downton Abbey is the heart of this community and you're keeping it beating,".
THE NEW POSTERS The most recent film posters show the divide between the upstairs and downstairs, with characters posing together in pairs.
WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED? The Downton Abbey film will be released on 13 September, 2019, in the UK and on 20 September in Portugal.
WHO'S GOING TO BE IN IT? It can't have been easy gathering together the full former cast, many of whom have gone on to work on large-scale Hollywood projects or Broadway shows since. Unfortunately Lily James will not be returning as Lady Rose. However a lot of the old favourites will still be involved, including Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech, Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt, Jim Carter, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern. Matthew Goode will be back as Mary's husband, Henry Talbot, but without much airtime, "I'm just popping in at the end, which is a nice way to do it," he told Digital Spy. Dame Maggie Smith will be reprising her role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess..
NEW ADDITIONS That include the actress Imelda Staunton ('Harry Potter', 'Vera Drake'), who incidentally is married to Jim Carter, the actor who plays Mr Carson in the show, as well as Tuppence Middleton ('War & Peace') and Stephen Campbell Moor ('The History Boys').
REFRESHING OUR MEMORY How did the series end? It was on Christmas Day 2015 on a relatively high note: Edith married Bertie Pelham - despite him originally calling off the engagement due to finding out about her daughter Marigold - Anna gave birth to her first child, and Mary revealed that she was pregnant with her second child. The last episode was set at the end of 1925, but whether the film continues from this point is not yet known. Julian Fellowes has previously revealed that he liked the idea of going back in time for the film version. Some kind of a prequel... maybe...
WHEN DID THEY START FILMING? September 2018. A few behind-the-scenes pictures of the cast spending time together pre-filming started to be seen on Instagram since then.
AWARDS During the course of its six seasons it garnered three Golden Globe Awards and 15 Primetime Emmys (with an incredible 69 Emmy nominations in total), making it the most-nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys. It also earned a special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show. Julian Fellowes might be keen to replicate this success with the big-screen adaptation.
