Well, well, well... if it's not one of the most wonderful gardens in London... I don't know what it is!...
On the first time I went to Hampstead... I couldn't leave without going to the huge park, obviously! But first... I had to find the Hill Garden and Pergola. And gosh... I had to walk a lot to get there! And I have to say that it's not the easiest task, because it really is well hidden into the woods.
It took me maybe 40 minutes to get there... The garden is a bit hidden, quite a trek away from Hampstead station, but worth the walk! It's like a pretty little oasis of peace and quiet. It's very romantic... it could be perfect for an outdoor production of 'Romeo and Juliet'.
It is so gorgeous that it takes our breath away. I would say this is a magnificent place to spend at least half an hour, even only to contemplate it, away from the civilization. A nice place to connect with nature and calm your mind down. The entry is free, but filming and photoshoots apparently require a permit.
THE STORY BEHIND THE GARDEN It was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme, who made his fortune selling soap. One summer’s eve in 1904, he decided that his nearby mansion needed an extravagant terrace, to host garden parties and lazy summer nights. So, being filthy rich, he decided to build it.
Though beautiful, Hampstead Pergola suffered in the aftermath of Leverhulme’s death and during World War 2. In 1989, the place was almost falling apart. It is far better now, but apparently resurrection is still underway.
Its beauty is magical, whether in the green of summer, or under grey skies. In fact, it really is a place for all seasons.
Nowadays, it also happens to be a licensed wedding venue, and if you stump up £2300, you can tie the knot in this magical garden.

A primeira vez que fui a Hampstead... não pude sair de lá sem ir ao gigantesco parque, obviamente! Mas primeiro... eu tinha que encontrar o Hill Garden and Pergola. E minha nossa... tive que andar muito para chegar lá! Devo dizer que não é a tarefa mais fácil, porque o jardim está bem escondido no meio da floresta.
Demorei uns 40 minutos para chegar lá... O jardim é um pouco escondido, muito longe da estação de Hampstead, mas vale a pena a caminhada! É como um pequeno oásis de paz e tranquilidade. É muito romântico... o cenário perfeito para uma produção ao ar livre de "Romeu e Julieta".
É tão lindo que nos tira o fôlego. Eu diria que este é um lugar magnífico para passar pelo menos meia hora, só para contemplá-lo, longe da civilização. Um bom lugar para nos conectarmos com a natureza e acalmar a nossa mente. A entrada é gratuita, mas filmagens e sessões de fotos aparentemente só com uma autorização.
A HISTÓRIA POR DETRÁS DO JARDIM Foi encomendado por Lord Leverhulme, que fez a sua fortuna a vender sabão. Numa noite de verão, em 1904, ele decidiu que a sua mansão precisava de um terraço extravagante, para receber festas de jardim e noites de verão de diversão. Como tal, sendo ele podre de rico, decidiu construí-lo.
Apesar de bonito, Hampstead Pergola sofreu bastante após a morte de Leverhulme e durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Em 1989, o local esteve praticamente a cair aos pedaços. Está muito melhor agora, mas aparentemente o processo de recuperação ainda está a decorrer.
A sua beleza é mágica, quer na paisagem verde do verão, quer sob o céu cinzento. Na verdade, este é um lugar a visitar em todas as estações.
Hoje em dia, também é um local licenciado para casamentos, e se tiver £2300, pode dar o nó neste jardim mágico.
